How to Make a Tea Latte

Learn how to make an herbal tea latte with just a few simple steps using your choice of milk and your favourite herbal tea. Get creative with this one—the options are endless!

Not too long ago I discovered the world of tea lattes. I mean, I'd been ordering matcha lattes from coffee shops for a long time, but I learned the proper term for them back in January when I decided to go caffeine-free for a month. I was at a local cafe with Sean and tried awkwardly to explain the almond-milk-latte-with-a-teabag-in-it-instead-of-matcha I wanted. Suffice to say, I learned then and there that it was a tea latte I was after.

Tea lattes are just heated and frothed milk with tea. No espresso over here! I love them because the world is your oyster when it comes to making them. You can play around with your favourite milks, but the best part, you can use any tea you like.

My personal favourites herbal teas that work well as lattes are:

  • Matcha: energizing and rich in antioxidants

  • Earl grey: also known as a London Fog, I love an earl grey tea latte with soy milk

  • Peppermint: great for soothing digestion and bloating; has a very festive flavour

  • Chai: cozy & warming; I especially love blends with cardamom

How to Make a Tea Latte

All you need to make a tea latte is milk, a teabag, sweetener if desired, and I recommend using an electric milk frother. I got myself one last year and I love it. You could use a whisk instead, but the frother really makes the latte nice and foamy.

Tea lattes can be made with whichever milk you like best. Depending on the kind of tea, I tend to opt for either almond milk, soy milk, or sometimes oat milk. Whole milk works too!

To make a tea latte:

  1. Heat a mugful of milk in a pot and bring to a soft boil.

  2. Stir in sweetener if desired, such as honey or maple syrup

  3. Once boiling, begin frothing with your frother for about 10-20 seconds. I use the low setting (mine has 3 speeds). Tilt the frother at a 45 degree angle. I usually keep the base mostly, but not entirely, submerged in the milk to allow air in.

  4. Once it's sufficiently frothed, add your teabag to your mug and pour your frothed milk in. Let steep for a few minutes, and enjoy!
