How to Make Natural Moisturizing Face Oil
Learn how to make Natural Moisturizing Face Oil from home with your choice of carrier oils, speciality oils, and essential oils for soothing and nourishing the skin.
I’ve been using oils on my skin for well over a year now and I love it, especially once I learned how to make natural moisturizing face oil myself at home. I’ve always had dry skin, so moisturizing is my thing. And the best part about using oils on your face (and body) is that they’re incredibly softening, nourishing, and versatile.
If you’re new to making homemade oil blends, fear not, because it’s so easy to do!
Will Oils Clog Pores?
I worried about the exact same thing when I first switched over to oils, in fact, it’s the main reason why it took me so long to use them. Although switching to natural oils to moisturize (or even cleanse) your face can take some getting used to, they typically don’t cause breakouts. But I encourage you to experiment because different oils have different uses and benefits, and everyone is different.
How to Get Started
To make your oil blend you’ll need a carrier or “base” oil, speciality oil(s) and if desired, essential oils for fragrance and additional skin benefits. You’ll also need a small glass container. A 1 or 2oz container works great. Use approximately 2/3 carrier oil and 1/3 specialty oil, although you can adjust this as needed.
Ingredient #1: Carrier Oils
Carrier oils are oils that are used to dilute more potent oils before applying to the skin. There are so many carrier oils to choose from that have a variety of skin benefits:
Apricot Kernal Oil: gentle and light, great for sensitive or aging skin; absorbs quickly
Avocado Oil: softening, great for sensitive or aging skin; slower to absorb
Grapeseed Oil: great for normal or oily, sensitive skin; absorbs quickly
Hemp Seed Oil: light, great for all skin types
Jojoba Oil: great for any skin type including dry, oily or acne-prone; silky finish
Sweet Almond Oil: anti-inflammatory and great for sensitive, dry skin; absorbs slower
Coconut Oil: rich in soothing saturated fats; heavier on skin and slow absorbing. Use caution if very acne-prone.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: suitable for sensitive skin; softening, cleansing and slow absorbing
Ingredient #2: Specialty Oils
Specialty oils are more expensive and you don’t have to use them, but they're fantastic for adding extra nourishment for our skin due to the qualities they contain. Here are some great options:
Argan Oil: great for dry, aging, oily, normal, or acne-prone skin; silky finish
Tamanu Oil: incredible for acne, scarring and irritated or inflamed skin; slow absorbing
Rosehip Seed Oil: excellent for aging skin, wrinkles, sensitive skin; has strong scent!
Sea Buckthorn Oil: suitable for normal or dry skin; slow absorbing
Neem Oil: thick yet nourishing; slow absorbing but long shelf life
Ingredient #3: Essential Oils (Optional)
Essential oils are optional, but they can add a beautiful natural fragrance and also contain many skin soothing properties as well. Here are some to consider:
Frankincense (my favourite)
Lavender
Geranium
Rose
Rosemary
Lemongrass
Chamomile
Be sure not to overdo it with essentail oils and to read dilution instructions on the bottle. Essential oils can be harsh on the skin if used incorrectly.
Instructions
To make your oil blend, simply fill up bottle of choice approximately 2/3 or 3/4 full of your choice of carrier oil. I like jojoba and I’ve also used grapeseed in the past. You can use a standard 1 fl. oz. glass bottle, or any size you like.
Fill the remaining 1/3 with your choice of specialty oil.
If you’re using essential oils, add anywhere from 2-7 drops depending on your desired level of fragrance!
Shake gently and you’re done! Apply to clean skin, or use to remove makeup.
