Herbed Hemp Seed Dip & Dressing

The best part about this Herbed Hemp Seed Dip & Dressing is its many uses. Veggie dip, salad dressing, or a spread!

By far one of my favourite uses for hemp seeds is thickening sauces (and smoothies!) This creamy hemp seed dip recipe has been a staple of mine for ages now. The thing is, though, that it's always been a "throw some stuff in the blender and see how it goes" kind of recipe. Some hemp seeds, some apple cider vinegar, some grainy mustard, and some dried herbs. So it's taken me a while to perfect this recipe to a blog-worthy status (although I've shared it in some capacity in the past).

In previous versions that I've made of this recipe, I tried to use hemp seeds as the base as a means to thicken it exclusively without the use of oil. Not that I'm against using olive oil, but sometimes it's nice to have whole-food based dressings. However, I found that too many hemp seeds made this dressing have a peculiar, overpowering hemp-y taste. So I toned down the hemp seeds and added a little oil and decided that's just how it's gonna be.

That being said, I'm a big proponent of encouraging my readers (and viewers) to get creative in the kitchen. While I know that specific measurements in recipes are important, sometimes it's also a-okay to play around a little or add some additional flavours that you personally like (or if you do want to try an oil-free variation, simply use more hemp seeds and water).

For example, garlic is optional. I usually don't add garlic to this recipe but it does add a delicious kick if you're a garlic lover. You can also play around with the dried herbs. I typically use dill, parsley, and basil, but you could add oregano, thyme, or even paprika. The beauty of versatile recipes like this one is that you've got a good base recipe that can be tweaked any which way. I'm even thinking this dip would be quite delicious with some chipotle powder! Yums.

The best part about this recipe besides how awesome hemp seeds are (protein, omega-3 fats, and lots of fibre), is its many uses. This isn't just any ol' veggie dip, although that's one of the primary uses for it, but it also makes an excellent salad dressing or spread, kind of like mayo.
